Navigating Seasonal Allergies
I'm often asked "What herbs are good for (insert issue)?".
Herbs arenβt the cure, my friends, theyβre your trusty sidekicks.
They wonβt βfixβ what ails ya overnight, but they do help your body respond more gracefully. Think of them as your truest BFF. They can help calm the chaos and help your system reset.
Most health concerns stem from our lifestyle (diet, movement, sleep, stress). When we work on these 4 areas, or the specific ones weβre lacking in, it gives space for our body to function more optimally. Herbs are here to support us along the way but they can not make up for unhealthy lifestyle choices. No shame whatsoever! Weβre all human here and cake is delicious.
So, for example, letβs break down whatβs happening during an allergic reaction, why food sensitivities matter and which herbs can support you through the season to show it's about so much more than a "what herb works for xxx" approach - for just about every issue you might be facing.
Allergies are your immune system's overzealous response to substances it mistakenly sees as a threat - things like pollen, dust, mold, pet dander or even certain foods.
When youβre exposed to one of these βinvaders,β your immune system releases histamines and other chemicals, triggering inflammation to fight it off. The result? Runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, brain fog and fatigue. Itβs your body trying to helpβ¦but going a little overboard in the process.
Whatβs really going on?
Allergies are often a sign of an overloaded or confused immune system. If the gut is inflamed, the liver is sluggish or youβre constantly exposed to irritants (including foods your body doesnβt tolerate well), your system becomes hypersensitive to everything, even something as innocent as pollen.
One powerful step - removing food triggers.
If you suspect sensitivities to things like dairy, gluten, soy, sugar, corn or certain preservatives, cutting them out can dramatically reduce systemic inflammation. When your immune system isn't constantly on high alert, itβs better able to handle seasonal exposures without flipping the panic switch.
Herbal allies for seasonal support:
Nettle (Urtica dioica) β A classic antihistamine herb that helps calm allergic responses. Best taken daily leading up to and during allergy season.
Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) β Despite its reputation, goldenrod isnβt typically what is causing your allergies - it actually helps relieve them! Excellent for sinus congestion, watery eyes and post-nasal drip.
Elderflower (Sambucus nigra) β A gentle anti-inflammatory and decongestant for the upper respiratory tract. Helpful for soothing itchy eyes and runny noses.
Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) β Supports lung health and eases coughing and inflammation in the respiratory tract. A wonderful herb for those who feel allergies in their chest.
To work with these herbs, try combining them in teas, tinctures or infusions, and consider pairing them with a nourishing diet, good rest and time in clean, natural spaces to help reset your nervous system.
Your body is wise, friends. Sometimes it just needs a little helping hand to remember.
